The campaign for the just-launched collaboration between IYKYK local labels Buddy and Emma Jing featured a cast of Aotearoa's top emerging models – and several hair looks created by colleen senior stylist Sean Mahoney.
He worked with each model’s natural texture, and Nat’s curls were no exception.
Here’s how Sean elevated her curls on set, giving them a defined, voluminous finish – so you can recreate it at home.
STEP ONE: PREP
Starting with heat protection, on clean, naturally dried hair. Spray Evo Icon Welder liberally into hair, then work through Evo Liquid Rollers.
STEP TWO: DRY
Lightly dry the hair with a hairdryer to remove any moisture, and before you tong the curls.
STEP THREE: DEFINE
Using ghd’s Curve Thin Wand, follow the shapes of your natural curls to make them a little more defined. Start by sectioning the hair into three parts, ear-to-ear and temple-to-temple.
For the bottom, use large sections and twist and wrap the hair up the tong. For the middle part, use medium sections and flat wrap the hair. For the top, use a mix of twist and flat wraps. With each curl, work with the natural root formation.

STEP FOUR: SHAKE IT OUT
Lightly spray O&M’s W-Spray, then shake out the curls.
STEP FIVE: LIFT!
Flick your hair forward and spray the roots with the Davines Extra Strong Hair Spray directly into the roots to add extra lift and movement. A bit of wind adds some extra drama.
