Colleen Stylist, Sean Patrick Mahoney teaches us how to create the soft, sculptural hair look for the DARKMATTER editorial in the latest issue of Veil Magazine. Using volume, texture and gentle structure to achieve an effortless, cloud-like finish, here’s how to get the look!
YOU WILL NEED:
- Davines MELU Hair Shield
*Davines More Inside Volume Boosting Mousse - ghd Curve Wand
- Davines More Inside Medium Hold Hairspray
- Hair pick
- Hair ties and bobby pins
STEP 1: PREP
I started by generously misting the hair with Davines MELU Heat Shield to protect the hair from heat while maintaining its strength and condition throughout styling. Next, I applied two golf ball-sized pumps of Davines More Inside Volume Boosting Mousse through the hair before blow-drying. This creates a beautifully cushioned foundation with soft, touchable volume.

STEP 2: CURL & SHAPE
Using my ghd Curve Wand, I wrapped the hair in 1cm sections, starting from the nape and working up toward the crown to create consistent, structured curls. Once set, I gently stretched the curls using a hair pick, working in 1-inch sections from the nape upward to soften and expand the shape.

STEP 3: CREATE STRUCTURE
As the look progressed, I began to build subtle structure into an upstyle using blonde hair ties and blonde bobby pins, allowing the shape to evolve while keeping everything soft and seamless.

STEP 4: FINISH & BRUSH
To finish, I used Davines More Inside Medium Hold Hairspray for flexible hold and movement. As the shoot continued, I brushed the hair out further, enhancing that soft, airy, cloud-like texture.
