THE COLLEEN REGIMEN FOR OILY SKIN

We all love a glowy moment, but unfortunately there is a difference between a bit of dewiness versus your face feeling like the bottom of a fish and chip pack. Not ideal.

Forget trends like “glass skin” and “dolphin skin”, having legitimately oily skin is the real deal and it can be frustrating when all you want is for your face to feel comfortable and fresh throughout the day.

Oil production is absolutely essential and beneficial for our skin, as it is what protects from external toxic elements and environmental factors that lead skin to dry up and break.

However, too much oil can lead to clogged pores and a greater likelihood of breakouts, as well as just feeling discomfort on the face. Higher sebum production is mostly to do with genetics, but can also be affected by hormonal changes, diet, and a humid environment.

For those with oily skin, the key is to keep a diligent skin regimen that regulates sebum production, clears out any excess oil, and maintains the skin's balance.

IT'S ALL ABOUT BALANCE

Those with oily skin need to look for products that will remove excess oil from their skin without over-drying. In order to balance oiliness, clease with a non-foaming gel face wash and hydrate with light, non-comodogenic serums and moisturisers.

Look out for active ingredients like glycolic and salicylic acids that can heroically get rid of excess oil. Remember to pay close attention to where and when you incorporate them into your routine, as too many exfoliants at once will stress your skin out.

Work your way around oily skin and keep your face feeling fresh af by following our AM/PM routine below~

AM

  1. CLEANSE

First things first, wash your face with a gentle cleanser. Overdoing it with intense formulas and harsh scrubbing can strip the skin too much of its natural oils, and lead your skin to compensate for what's been removed by ramping up its oil production - not what we want.

Avoid this counterproductive cycle by using Salt By Hendrix Gel Cleanser, which gently yet effectively cleanses skin.

  1. NOURISH

After cleansing, nourish your skin with a lightweight serum. This water-like serum is perfect for oily skin types and features all the good stuff like Vitamin C and Aloe Vera.

  1. MOISTURISE

Daily moisturization is necessary for any skin type, no matter how counter-intuitive that might sound for oily skin. Again, if left to its own devices, skin will try to overcompensate for dryness and produce even more oil. Worry not, moisturiser doesn’t have to mean greasy. Moisturiser wants to be your friend, you just gotta find one with the right ingredients.

Look out for formulations that include glycerin and hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin, and niacinamide to lock it all in. Lucky for you, Aurora Face cream contains exactly that. This lightweight formula will keep your skin hydrated throughout the day without the use of heavy oils. Plus, it leaves a matte finish. Big yup.

And it goes without saying, top off with a trusty SPF!

PM

  1. CLEANSE

Begin your PM routine with another nice gentle cleanse, breaking down the oil buildup from throughout the day.

  1. EXFOLIATE

Sloughing off dead skin cells with an apricot scrub is a surefire no for oily skin. To exfoliate without overly stripping, use chemical exfoliants that also come formulated with hydrators. G-Juice is a Glycolic Acid toner that works to keep the PH levels of your skin balanced and gently exfoliate the skin’s surface - incredibly ideal for regulating oil production and preventing clogged pores.

This superstar formula also contains Hyaluronic Acid to ensure hydration levels are replenished. Start off with a weekly application to slowly build up your skin’s tolerance, then work your way to using this toner bi-nightly.

Reusable bamboo pads are the perfect match for an effective application, sweeping up debris and helping getting rid of any excess oil that wasn’t removed from cleansing.

It’s also a great idea to use a clay mask 1-2x a week, to draw out deep-seated oil and reset your skin. Clay masks go beyond and are king for unclogging pores. This clay mask also contains gentle AHA exfoliants, so on nights you wish to mask up, skip the toner and apply Amethyst straight after cleansing.

  1. NOURISH

Post-exfoliating, replenish your skin with another dose of this antioxidant dense serum.

  1. MOISTURISE

Don’t forget to moisturise at night too :-)
