TWIGGY HAIR LEXICON

The hair, the lashes, the cheeky look: model Twiggy in 1967, in one of her most famous photo sessions.

Few beauty moments have had the cultural aftershock of Twiggy in 1966. At just 16, Lesley Hornby became the face of modern youth and the Swinging Sixties: all sharp lines and wide eyes. Her legendary pixie cut, sculpted by British celebrity hairstylist Leonard Lewis - better known as Leonard of Mayfair - reframed hair as fashion, not finishing touch. Cropped and deliberately androgynous, it became inseparable from the rise of Mod style: graphic, youthful, London-born and unapologetically new.

"I'd been growing my hair," she told Jessie Ware’s podcast of that pivotal moment in the chair. "For a moment I kind of went, 'I don’t know whether I want my hair cut.' But I was in this very posh salon in Mayfair so I was a bit too shy to say I don't want it done, and I kind of nodded."

1966
An early shoot on London's King's Road, with her signature pixie and a swooping side fringe.

Twiggy's painted-on lower lashes - drawn beneath doll-like eyes - also became one of the most recognisable beauty signatures of the 20th century. Paired with pale lips and heavy liner, the look rejected glamour in favour of graphic impact, influencing everyone from runway artists to teenage girls with a mascara wand and a mirror.

From there, Twiggy's evolution mirrored her life, and the decades that followed. The severe pixie softened into bobs then gave way to the freer, curlier, more natural hair of the 1970s as she stepped into acting and theatre. The 1980s brought an understated, pared-back beauty while later years saw her return to elegant and age-defying variations of the bob.

In our latest Lexicon, we trace the supermodel's beauty journey and spotlight just some of her many iconic moments across the decades.

1974
Despite 'retiring' from modelling in 1970 - saying "You can't be a clothes hanger for your entire life!" - Twiggy still appeared on fashion magazine covers. This fantastical shot was from the 1974 Christmas cover of British Vogue, with voluminous curls studded with stars.
